Traditional Palheiro Houses
In the beautiful village of Santana you will find stunning houses. Called casas de colmo in Portuguese, these typical houses are a well-known tourist attraction.
The origin of the houses goes back to the 1500s. Until recently, these houses were used by farmers.
Traditional Palheiro Houses are almost like fairy tales and have a type A shape and are covered with straw (colmo).
The walls of the houses here are white, the doors are red and the window frames are blue.
These houses used to be spread all over Madeira, but now they can only be found in and around Santana.
The visit is free. There are only a few scattered houses. This is just for tourists.
It’s nice to see their homes and what they look like inside.
I really liked this houses. A great place for relaxation. I recommend it to everyone. Dont forget to get around Santana…
