Traditional Historic Town Santana

Located on the Madeira Island of Portugal, Traditional Historic Town Santana is located on the northern coast of island.

The cute houses of this small island town with a population of about 10000 people enchant its visitors.

How to get to Santana

Since the traditional Palheiro Houses are located in the center of city, you must first come to Santana.

The city is on the northwest coast of the island, a 50-minute drive from Funchal. The north road of the island are pictures of inaccessible places that can often only be admired from a distance or from the water.

Winding narrow roads hanging over precipices and vertical rocks falling straight into the water, towns between several hundred meters high walls and tropical forests filling the valleys. Could write a lot about it.

If you dont want a drive, The best way to get from Funchal to Santana is to take line 56 bus. It takes 1h 12m and costs 2€-4€.

-Camacha

When you join a Santana tour, Camacha is usually your first stop.

Camacha is the place where the first official football match was played in 1875. Footballer Ronaldo is from here.

The city is famous for its straw knitting.World famous wicker tobogans are made here. Selling handmade wicker breadbaskets, wicker boxes, wicker baskets there are shops.

-Pico de Airoe

One of the most beautiful places of Santana tour is undoubtedly the Pico de Airoe.

There is a café and radar station at an altitude of 1680 meters.

The scenery is beyond amazing, those who come here make sure to take your coats with you because it can be quite cold.

-Traditional Palheiro Houses

These houses are almost like fairy tales. Traditional Madeira houses in town seem to have jumped out of an artist’s painting.

These gable roofs are covered with straw. The walls of the houses here are white, the doors are red and the window frames are blue.

-Ribeiro Frio

If you think a beautiful forest walk would be great after a super scenic tour, an 11 km forest walking path awaits you. During our walk, you can see papaya, mango, avocado, fig, passion fruit, coffee trees and sugar cane fields. You can take a coffee and sightseeing break at Ribeiro Frio. 

Poncha, a delicious liqueur unique to Madeira, is produced here. They mix the cane rum with orange and honey. You must taste a great taste. 

Here they sell tourist souvenirs and tropical flower seeds unique to the island. Beautiful flowers are enough to make people happy.

You were clear after this long trip. It’s time to taste the Santana shish kebabs. You should definitely eat the shish kebabs made on skewers unique to the town.

I really liked this town.

A great place for relaxation.  Words are insufficient to describe this island, each place and a piece of God’s incredible creation.  I recommend it to everyone.
